Quite often learners use CAN when they should be using MAY. This is becuase both verbs are commonly translated to Spanish as PODER, though their meanings are different:
CAN: ability, capacity, know how to, option.
He can speak five languages.Can you reach that box on the top of the shelves?
You can pay cash or by credit card.
MAY: probability, chances, uncertainty.
(It usually translates as PUEDE QUE or PODRÍA)It may rain this weekend.
We may have to cancel our meeting.
He may be stuck in a traffic jam.
Both can be used to ask for permission. In this case may is the polite way:
- Can/may I have another biscuit?
- You can/may stay in the kitchen until midnight.
Many times it sounds more natural to use MAY rather than MAYBE or IT'S POSSIBLE THAT:
- Maybe I have to do all the paperwork again. ---> I may have to do all the paperwork again.
- It's possible that my family visit me this summer. ---> My family may visit me this summer.
