Preposiciones IN, ON y AT. What a mess!

Cómo usar in, on y at. Patrones generales.

    - IN: La traducción estándar. Si tienes dudas, simplemente usa in.
    - ON: Para superficies (sobre) o días.
    - AT: Para tiempo y lugares más específicos (a veces a la/a las en español).

Veamos algunos ejemplos.

IN, ON y AT como preposiciones de tiempo.

AT para indicar un tiempo muy específico:
    - Horas: at 10 o'clock, at half past two, at 9.15 am.
    - At the moment, pues los momentos se supone que cortos.
    - Momentos específicos del día: at midday, at midnight, at lunchtime.
    - Momentos específicos de un evento: at the beginning of the class, at the end of the book, pero decimos in the middle of the street (el medio puede ser muy largo, pero el principio y el final son específicos).

ON para días:
    - De la semana: on Fridays, on Mondays and Wednesdays, on Saturday evening.
    - Fechas (dates): on January 1, on the 25th of September.
    - Días con nombre propio: on Christmas Day, on New Year's Eve, on St. Patrick's Day.
    - Cualquier ___day: on holidays, on a holiday, on your birthday.

IN para:
    - Franjas del día: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening y (excepción!) at night.
    - Cualquier periodo de tiempo largo: in May (recuerda que on May 15 es una fecha y lleva on), in 1999, in the 80s, in the 20th century.

Otros: Los británicos suelen usar at con at weekends/at Christmas, mientras los americanos usan on.

IN, ON y AT como preposiciones de lugar.

Aquí solemos encontrar más dificultades. Echa un ojo (have a look at) al cuadro de arriba.
IN = dentro de. ON = sobre. AT = al lado de. Aunque por supuesto ésto no aclara todos los casos.

ON para superficies (porque están sobre algo):
    - Sobre: The plates are on the table, on the floor, on the ground.
    - No sólo superficies horizontales: a poster on the wall, a stain (mancha) on the ceiling/skin/shirt.
    - Escribir o lo escrito en cualquier superficie: write it on a paper/notepad/your hand, a name on a list/exam/contract/menu.
    - Media (medios the comunicación): on TV, on the radio, on the internet, online, on a website/Facebook/Wikipedia.
    - Gadgets (cacharros): the battery/credit/apps on my phone/laptop (ordenador portátil), music on your CD/mp3 player/iPod.
    - Caminos/rutas: a restaurant on Oxford Street, an accident on the road, I'm on the way home, on a trip.

AT para puntos concretos (at) dentro de otros más grandes (in):
    - La de la/el de la: the man a the counter (mostrador), the woman at reception, the guy at the bar.
    - Sentarse en (no sobre si no al lado): he's not at his desk, at the table, at the ticket office/window.
    - Quedar/esperar en: I'll wait for you at the exit of the station, let's meet at Tony's.
    - Lugares frecuentados regularmente: at home, at work, at school/University (si eres estudiante).
     - En casa/local de alguien: at my place, at my parent's house, at the baker's/butcher's/greengrocer's, at Pepe's restaurant.
    - Direcciones: The Prime minister lives at 10 Downing Street, send me an email at madridcitylessons@gmail.com.
    - Eventos: at a party/concert/meeting/conference.
    - Recintos: an exhibition at the art gallery, a football match at the Olympic Stadium, a lecture at the Conference Hall.
    - Puntos en una ruta: get off (bájate) at the next stop/station, take the exit at km 55.

Leave me a comment!
